My sister Lisa commented "My first thoughts were that since your car was already dark blue, it would look great painted with the constellations of the night sky, or creatures of the deep sea, peeking into your windows, but from what I'm reading it seems like you want something much deeper. How about a patchwork quilt-y thing with your favorite quotes or sayings, and other squares (or not squares)with artwork to illustrate each one. Actually, that reminds me of the quilt you did for your wedding".
I love both of these ideas for a variety of reasons. The idea of using the original dark blue as a part of the design instead of trying to cover all of it makes the project much more manageable. It would be very fun to have a few celestial surprises on the top of the car for those adventurous agile people who climb up to take a look. I've always loved the M.C. Escher drawing "Night and Day" that plays with positive and negative space. It would be great to use the natural dark blue van color as both fore and back ground.
Lisa's other suggestion about a patchwork quilt theme also plays into my love of sewing and fabrics. When Richard and I got married 23 years ago we asked people to make quilt squares that would be sewn together into a wedding quilt. It took about ten years to actually get it pieced together (with lots of help from Sally and Terri). I love seeing squares from old friends, family members, and people who cared enough to want to participate. In a lot of ways, that's what this art car making project is all about. I can't wait to wake up in the morning, head out to my car, and see beautiful art work that my friends and family have made. What a great way to start your day - driving to work in a car that screams "people care about me"!
