Carzy Quilt

I just got back from meeting with one of the artist facilitators who will be working on this project with us. After a nice glass of wine we got to thinking about fabric as a way to cover the car instead of paint. As a collector of fabric, a sewer, and fibers person, this idea is really exciting to me. It will also be pretty easy for everyone to glue on fabrics in a "crazy quilt" kind of pattern without too much micro managing. The embroidery edging of fancy stitches could be done with sharpie markers afterwords.  The name of this technique is hereafter called "CARzy quilting".  Check out this quilted truck from the Houston Texas 2007 art car parade.   This truck is hung with quilts that are shaped to fit the car.  Our idea is to glue random shapes of fabric to the body of the car in interesting patterns and color schemes. Take a look at these traditional crazy quilt designs as inspiration for our Carzy quilt van.

  1. The name Carzy Quilt came up as we were searching for pictures of crazy quilts on Google images; Mom accidentally typed carzy instead of crazy, and I saw it and said "Carzy Quilt!"

  2. The picture you provided is a car cover that can easily be removed, meaning that it is probably there just for special occasions. I would be really concerned about fabric on a daily use vehicle. I would think that it would fray very quickly and be nearly impossible to clean. I think you would be better off sticking to paint.

  3. Fantastic! Yes, you might need to weatherproof it or change its plumage in the winter. Like a car costume.

More inspiration in this vein, from the very talented Scott St. John, who works with maps in his paintings.
