Fabric Fabric Everywhere

So you must have figured out by now that making a Carzy Quilt takes a lot of fabric.  After cleaning out my closets and the wonderful trip to DuBois Textiles (see blog entry On Our Way) I have spent hours and hours cutting quilt piece shapes.  It's been so fun to plan out the colors and patterns.  Here is all of the fabric that we will be using on the car. I'm looking forward to getting in the car on a cold morning and seeing a swatch of the beautiful spring floral matching sun dresses that Richard bought for me, Hannah, and Maya on Mothers Day 1999.

Thank you Suzie for putting me in touch with Michelle who runs the fabric printer at MICA.  In one hour, Michelle was able to save me weeks of work by printing out all of the languages we will be using on the car. The "ink jet" printer is an amazing machine that uses dye instead of ink. It uses an illustrator tiff file to print a design on huge rolls of paper-backed fabric. Once the printing was complete Michelle pealed the paper backing off and rolled the yardage around a tube for steaming. The tube was inserted into a high pressurized tank for 30 minutes to set the dye.  I will wash the fabric and cut it into strips so that we can glue the strips around the lower portion of the car.

Tomorrow we will wash the van and then start to mask out the windows and handles prior to applying the glue. Stay tuned!

  1. can't wait to see you -- my cousin ran an auto body shop for many years -- do you still need advice on covering the fabric?
